Birth Registration Appointment

CORONAVIRUS - if you're adhering to the latest Government guidelines and self-isolating, or awaiting a covid-19 test result, you must not attend the office.

To adhere to social distancing guidelines we can only admit the minimum number of people required to complete a legal registration into the building. You are permitted to bring the child being registered to the appointment (if no alternative child care is available) but we cannot admit other persons/children.

From 8th August the Government extended the policy on the wearing of face coverings in England, it is now mandatory for all visitors to wear a face covering while in a public library (unless you are medically excempt).

The birth of your baby must be registered within 42 days (6 weeks) by the correct registration district.

Babies born at either Northampton General Hospital or Kettering General Hospital should be registered with us. However if the birth took place at home, please check the location is within the Northamptonshire Registration District, as some addresses with NN postcode's may not be included within the county border.

If you wish to register a birth in accordance with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008, or have any questions about same sex birth registrations, please email

The Registration Service provides pre-booked appointments only, we do not offer walk-in appointments at any of our offices.

When booking your appointment you will have the opportunity to purchase birth certificates, please have your payment card with you before proceeding. Please note - to comply with the latest Govt. Guidelines, and to minimise any potential risk to our customers & staff, we're unable to take cash or card payments for certificates in our offices at this time.

Once your appointment has been made you will be given a reference number; please keep this safe as it will be required if you wish to amend or cancel your appointment.

Please ensure you arrive in good time for your appointment, ideally 10 minutes prior to the appointment start time to confirm your arrival

If you arrive more than 10 minutes late the registrar will not be able to see you and you'll need to book another appointment with the service, additional charges may also be applied (see below).

Use of translators - all informants must be able to understand and speak English so they can answer the statutory questions. If you're married or in a Civil Partnership you can translate for each other, if you both choose to attend the appointment. If you're not married or in a Civil Partnership you cannot translate for each other - so you must bring somebody else to the appointment who can translate for you.

To ensure compliance with Data Protection and Health & Safety legislation we cannot allow food and/or drink into the Registrar's office.

The Registration Service is unable to refund any pre-paid fees if you: -

  • fail to attend your appointment and do not contact us in advance
  • arrive more than 10 minutes late
  • cannot provide all of the information and/or documents required
  • are refused access to the building as you attend with additional people and/or children

Once your appointment has been made you will receive a reference number. Please retain this as it will be required if you need to contact us to amend or cancel your appointment.
